About Us

SCS is a non-profit organization, directed by a 13-person Board of Directors which meets monthly in Sitka. Staff is comprised of an Executive Director, Financial & Special Projects Director, Conservation Director, Community Outreach Coordinator, and Office Manager. We have a three-person GIS Mapping Center/ field team, allowing us to provide land use data to regional and national conservation groups. Our visibility and influence in community quality-of-life issues is strong.

Though our name may imply that we are focused on Sitka, our scope is fully regional and focused on protecting the entire Tongass. With  Wilderness as our central organizing theme, SCS holds the hardest line in Southeast conservation. We seek to protect every untouched roadless area, coastline, and the associated biota from roads, timber sales, and types of visitation that compromise Wilderness character. We seek to encourage a new regional economy that leaves industrial destruction to the past, and is based on 1) commercial fishing, 2) subsistence hunting, fishing and gathering, 3) recreation, and 4) visitation services -- all of which must occur at sustainable levels.

We share our passion for the Tongass with conservationists, visitors, foundation representatives, and national Congressmen who visit Sitka and seek to understand the conservation issues in America's largest national forest. We know that people who walk among the trees, watch the wildlife, catch the fish, and experience the solitude become partners with SCS.
