Sitka Conservation Society

Bear AwareBear Aware Campaign

Baranof Island has one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in the world, and the Sitka Conservation Society is interested in seeing that bears and people coexist safely.  Each spring, shortly before the first bears of the year begin to show up in neighborhoods at the edges of town, the Sitka Conservation Society re-launches its bear aware campaign.  Using public service announcements as well as leaflet drops in neighborhoods that commonly see bear activity, the campaign strives to remind the public how to avoid unwanted bear encounters.  Namely, the campaign spreads the message of not putting trash out until the day it is picked up, not filling bird feeders, and not leaving fish waste outside.  The goal of the campaign is not only to keep people safe, but to keep bears safe as well.
